Travel Tidbits

  • British Airways announced changes this week to their missionary contract, lowering current fares by hundreds of dollars, depending on the inventory used. Contact us for details!

  • South African recently announced changes to their missionary contract. We can now hold reservations without deposit or payment until 45 days prior to departure, instead of only 3 weeks after booking, as previously has been the case. This will open up many opportunities for mission teams to take advantage of our low missionary fares on South African Airlines.

  • With the Delta-Northwest merger now complete, we should start to see some changes to our Northwest missionary contract in the 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2009. Delta has some great routes into Africa and other parts of the world, so we're excited to see how this merger will positively affect the route choices available to you.

  • Lufthansa is reportedly attempting to purchase Austrian Airlines, and British Airways is attempting to merge with Qantas and Iberia.

Travel Tips

In a previous newsletter, we offered some "travel tips." How many can you find in the poem below?

'Twas the Night Before Take-Off

'Twas the night before take-off, and all through the house,
Everyone was sleeping, except Mrs. Krouse.

The family's bags were packed with extra special care,
Knowing the TSA would soon be peeking in there.

"So much to remember" she thought, pursing her lips,
Mama Krouse's eyes rolled reviewing Ministry Travel's Travel Tips.

"Cursed!" she said, as her mouth started to drool.
She had forgotten all about the 3-1-1 rule.

So off to Target she ran, dressed in her rags
for the 3 oz carry on liquids, she needed quart sized bags.

"Allow plenty of time - 3 hours," she read,
As she set the alarm and went off to bed.

A few hours later, the alarm started beeping,
But poor Mrs. Krouse wished she was still sleeping.

But arise she did and woke all the pack.
She grabbed all the luggage, passports, and a snack.

Prepared for the trip, boarding passes in tow,
Mrs. Krouse checked her tips, confidently ready to go.

Flights reconfirmed, she knew they'd be fine.
The final step would be that security line.

"Take your shoes off," she remembered, and "remove the laptop."
"Keep moving through the line. Don't dawdle. Don't stop!"

Mrs. Krouse and her family to the gate they did find
Plenty of time to relax and unwind.

Because they followed the tips and used their brain
They had a stress-free morning awaiting their plane.

She walked down the jet way and disappeared out of site
Yelling, "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good flight!"

Recruiting Mission Teams - Strategy #4

If you are like many team leaders, mobilizing enough people for your trips is sometimes a struggle. It is tough getting people to volunteer halfway around the world. Utilizing your current team as a recruiting force for future trips can help overcome some of this hurdle.

Train Your Team to Communicate Effectively

Most people do not know how to give an effective presentation about their trip. One way to improve this is by providing an outline that can be used in both formal presentations and informal gatherings. Here’s a suggested outline:

1) My most memorable moment.

 2) What I saw God do in others.

3) What I saw God do in me.

Also, encourage your team to focus on the main facts of a story rather than minor details. “We left early in the morning for the remote village” is much better than “After walking quickly to our beige-colored van, the one with the crack in the rear window, driven by Ahmad, the second cousin of our translator’s sister’s aunt, we went to a remote village in the early morning hours.” The latter may work in a novel, but it is hard to follow in an oral presentation.

In addition, teach your team to not “dump” on people when asked about their trip. Most people who ask about a trip expect a short, concise response, not a 15 minute rambling about the trip’s minutest details! Teach your team to create a 60 second summary response. If the person asking about the trip is interested in more, the team member can go into depth using their “outline.” By effectively communicating their experiences, your team will multiply your recruiting efforts.

This is the fourth of five strategies for easier and more successful mission team recruiting. Read Frank Banfill's entire article.
